AeroVironment has announced the launch of three new systems in its Switchblade family: the Switchblade 600 Block 2, Switchblade 400, and Switchblade 300 Block 20 featuring a modular explosively formed penetrator (EFP) payload.

These additions aim to broaden the Switchblade product line to support a range of operational needs – from portable, close-range precision strikes to extended-duration, multi-domain anti-armor missions. The company states that the new systems are designed to help maintain tactical superiority in high-threat environments.

“Warfighters require scalable, reliable, and interoperable effects that can be tailored to the threat and the environment,” said Trace Stevenson, President of Autonomous Systems at AV.

“These three new Switchblade variants deliver that flexibility and scalability. Each design builds on proven fielded capability while adding important new capabilities that reduce risk and expand mission sets.”

The Switchblade 600 Block 2 is described as a long-endurance, multi-domain loitering munition equipped with advanced avionics, precision targeting, and a secondary payload bay. It includes AI/ML-enabled processing, Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), encrypted M-Code GPS, and integrated Silvus MANET radios. The system offers a 20% increase in endurance, a handoff and relay range exceeding 100 kilometers, and is IP67-rated for maritime use.

The newly introduced Switchblade 400 is a medium-range, man-portable anti-armor munition with rocket-assisted take-off (RATO). Weighing under 40 pounds, it is designed to provide individual soldiers with rapid deployment capabilities against armored targets. The system is compatible with common launch tubes and features autonomous threat detection and classification through ATR and edge computing.

The Switchblade 300 Block 20 now includes a modular payload bay supporting an EFP warhead, enhancing its effectiveness against armored threats. Weighing 7.2 pounds, the system is backpackable and deployable in under two minutes. It features improved sensors, a panning camera suite, a touchscreen interface, and extended range capabilities with an optional 30 km antenna.

All three systems are built using Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) standards, allowing integration with platforms such as ATAK, Nett Warrior, and AV Halo Command Tactical software. The systems share a common tablet-based Fire Control UI, encrypted datalinks, and mission planning tools, which the company says help reduce logistical complexity and training time.

“AV has delivered thousands of Switchblade systems over the last 13 years, with hundreds of combat engagements shaping our design evolution,” said Jimmy Jenkins, Executive Vice President of Precision Strike and Defense Systems at AV.

“The new Switchblade systems are warfighter-driven solutions – faster, smarter, and optimized for multi-domain operations. Our continuous innovation ensures US and allied forces remain equipped with rapid, adaptable, and overwhelming precision strike effects to maintain a tactical advantage on the modern battlefield.”

AeroVironment reports that Switchblade systems have been widely adopted, including by US and Ukrainian forces. The company is scaling up production, increasing output of the Switchblade 600 from 40 to 240 units per month over the past year. With continued investment in its Simi Valley, California facility and the opening of a new manufacturing site in Salt Lake City, Utah, AV anticipates monthly production to exceed 1,200 units in the near future.

Join the Loitering Munitions Conference, taking place in London on November 18-19 to hear more from AV on their latest additions to the Switchblade family.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
