On the Feb. 17, 2026, the European Commission has approved a higher 7.2 mg maintenance dose of Wegovy, an injectable form of semaglutide, for adults living with obesity who may need additional support to achieve weight loss. The decision applies across all 27 European Union member states and follows a positive opinion issued in December by the European Medicines Agency’s scientific committee.

The newly approved dose is intended for adults who have already been treated with the 2.4 mg dose and require further weight reduction. Under the approval, physicians in the EU may prescribe the 7.2 mg dose as three 2.4 mg injections taken during the same weekly session. Novo Nordisk has also applied for approval of a single-dose 7.2 mg pen, which, if cleared by regulators, could become available later this year.

With the expanded dosing option, adults with obesity in the EU may now transition directly from the 2.4 mg dose to the higher 7.2 mg dose after at least four weeks of treatment, where clinically appropriate. Wegovy 7.2 mg is already approved and available in the United Kingdom, while regulatory reviews are ongoing in the United States and several other countries.

The approval was supported by results from two late-stage clinical trials, STEP UP and STEP UP T2D, which together enrolled nearly 1,900 participants. STEP UP included 1,407 adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes, while STEP UP T2D enrolled 512 adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Participants received the 7.2 mg dose once weekly in combination with lifestyle interventions, including dietary changes and increased physical activity.

In STEP UP, adults without diabetes who received Wegovy 7.2 mg lost an average of about 21 percent of their body weight over approximately 68 weeks, compared with around 2 percent among those receiving placebo. About one-third of participants in the higher-dose group lost at least 25 percent of their body weight. Body composition analyses showed that 84 percent of the weight lost was from fat mass, with testing indicating preserved muscle function.

The most commonly reported side effects included nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting, affecting 24.8 percent of participants, as well as dysaesthesia, reported by 22.9 percent. These events were generally described as mild to moderate and temporary.

“This approval is another important step in helping people living with obesity reach very significant weight loss,” said Emil Kongshøj Larsen, executive vice president of International Operations at Novo Nordisk. “The new dose gives healthcare professionals even more flexibility to tailor treatment and help people with obesity achieve their weight loss and health goals.”

Wegovy is now approved in the EU as a once-weekly injection available in six dose strengths ranging from 0.25 mg to 7.2 mg, to be used alongside reduced-calorie diets and increased physical activity as part of a comprehensive weight management approach.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
