Energy From Waste
3 December - 4 December 2024
Energy From Waste

Energy from Waste reduces pollution, supports local economy, and reduce energy reliance on imports - making it an invaluable opportunity for individuals, companies, and nations alike.

With this in mind, our Energy from Waste Conference returns to the heart of London for its 17th year - to deliver the leading event dedicated to the recovery of energy from industrial and domestic waste. Attracting policy experts, authorities in funding, government representatives, and business leaders this conference will be the place to network and gain access to the latest plans, case studies, and industry overviews.

As such, this conference remains an essential date on the calendar for those in the Energy from Waste community.

With case studies from the leading Energy from Waste plants within UK and Europe the event will give an overall look into all aspects of running a successful facility. We delve deep into both small scale and large scale production and understand the benefits and constraints found within both size projects, in addition to finding out how new innovations can maximise value and optimise investment returns.

A focus on how Energy from Waste sits within the UK’s ambition on the road to net zero and how technology within the Carbon capture and storage market coupled with the evolvement and implementation of district heating is an essential part of that journey. With updates on how legislation and policy can stimulate more investment this comprehensive conference remains the an essential calendar date for those in the Energy from Waste community.

Retrofitting EU Policy Landscape for EfW – a Never-Ending Challenge

Jakob Sahlén, Environment & Sustainability Manager, Sysav

Whilst continuously navigating in between energy and waste policy framework, EfW is a societal necessity for treatment of residual waste, destroying waste that would otherwise be harmful to public health, and for treatment of rejects from recycling. Moreover, EfW is a prerequisite for restrictions on landfill and an important contributor to electric grids and heat and cooling infrastructure. There is a never-ending binary policy dilemma that the EfW industry and policy makers alike need to navigate in a sustainable fashion – especially now when waste-CCUS is a prerequisite for cities, regions, and countries to be able to reach its climate targets.

  • EFW's role in achieving waste diversion targets and reducing reliance on landfills
  • Emphasising the need for policy that reconciles EfW's role in both energy production and sustainable waste management
  • The importance of integrating carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies for EfW to contribute to achieving climate targets

Panel Discussion B: UK Focus: Preparing for the Inclusion of EfW in the Emissions Trading Scheme

Earlier this year, the UK ETS Authority published the full consultation setting out the how the UK ETS will be extended to Energy from Waste. This confirmed the intention to include EfW facilities from 2028, with a monitoring only period from January 1st 2026. This represents the biggest policy intervention in the sector since the introduction of landfill tax, fundamentally impacting the economics of the sector. This presentation will explore the current policy environment and provide operators and residual waste customers with an overview of the expected changes to the EfW landscape.

  • What are the UK ETS Authority suggesting? What are the key policy levers?
  • What does inclusion by 2028 mean? What is required to ensure this policy drives decarbonisation of the sector.
  • What is the likely impact on the sector, how can these be mitigated, and how will this link with waste reduction, reuse and recycling?
  • What should operators be preparing for? What are the new regulations?

Carbon Focus: How Carbon Pricing Shapes the Future of EFW

Dr Swen Grossgebauer, Head of Innovation and Proposals, MVV Environment

The growing concern over climate change is driving the implementation of carbon pricing mechanisms around the world. This presentation explores the potential impact of carbon pricing on the competitiveness of EFW compared to other energy sources.

  • To what extent do carbon pricing mechanisms make EFW more attractive by placing a cost on the carbon emissions associated with fossil fuel-based energy sources?
  • Understanding the carbon footprint of different waste streams to maximise revenue under carbon pricing schemes
  • Analysing how carbon pricing can influence investment decisions for new EFW facilities and potential upgrades to existing ones
  • Exploring how CCS technologies integrated with EFW plants can further enhance their environmental and economic competitiveness in a carbon-priced world
  • How will the design and implementation of specific carbon pricing policies influence the future trajectory of the EFW sector?

Beyond Landfills: Finding the Best Path for Residual Waste Recovery

Paul James, Technical Director, SLR Consulting Limited

Effectively managing residual waste is a critical challenge. This presentation explores various approaches, including traditional Energy-from-Waste (EfW), EfW with Carbon Capture, and a new option: converting residuals into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). We'll compare their costs, environmental impact and technological readiness to help identify the most sustainable solution for residual waste treatment. It will explore key considerations, such as:

  • Cost: Evaluating the upfront and operational costs of each technology
  • Carbon Impact: Assessing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with each process
  • Technology Readiness: Examining the maturity and scalability of each treatment option

    WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
