overview

This September in London, SAE Media Group will host their 2nd annual Telecoms for Smart Grids Conference on the 24th and 25th of September. The event will address Utility requirements, Government and regulatory guidelines, and Smart Grid and metering communication pilots.
We will hear unique case studies from the UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Austria and Portugal, as well as hear what technology is most capable of delivering a secure, reliable and flexible architecture.

The future of the Smart Grid and Metering industries success will depend on many factors, the one most important at the heart of all future deployments being the establishment of it's communication infrastructure. If the Smart Grid is going to be a success, we will need to see a much required convergence and partnership, of both public and private communications, M2M, and the Utilities industries

This year's event boasts more Utility speaking sessions and more case studies than previous events. As communications infrastructure takes center stage for Grid and Metering deployments, you cannot afford to miss this event. Our focus is on bringing the most influential and informative stakeholders together for a in-depth discussion over the course of two days to determine what technologies will be the most reliable, secure, flexible, and scalable.
With the imminent Smart Meter roll out in the UK, ongoing procurement and bidding for the DCC, the many deployments of Smart Energy technology already in use throughout Europe, we are set for a unique discussion on trial and error, success and failure and best practice.

  • Understand the convergence of Telecoms and Utilities
  • Hear about UK and EU policy framework for Smart Networks
  • Learn about the communication requirements for smart Implementation, and implementation within the community
  • Benefit from case studies into the new approaches for Smart Meters, Smart Cities and Smart Homes in Germany, Austria, France, Ireland,Portugal and the UK
  • Gain insight from a DNO perspective on the communications requirements for the Smart Meter roll out in Germany
  • Learn about Smart Grid Infrastructures and challenges for ICT
  • Case studies! GRID4EU and Green eMotion will discuss their connectivity challenges and successes
  • What are the 4G WiMax opportunities for Smart Grid - hear it here first
  • Develop further insight into Electric Vehicle and Telco platform integration, case studies from Italy you cannot miss
  • How are public and private partners developing a Smart Network for Smart Water and Smart City?
  • Understand how Telecommunications can contribute to Smart Metering development
  • What are the Data Communications requirements moving forward?

This year's event is strategically aligned with many European Smart deployments, UK's Smart programme and uniquely aligned with contract and bidding for the DCC process.
There are more Utility case studies and speakers on this year's event than any other event we run in this sector.

This year we are working with some of the most authoritative and active Communication and technology vendors in the market, which will add significant insight into how they plan on delivering a secure and reliable network.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn further about the Convergence of Telecoms and Utilities sectors, by attending our first post conference workshop on the topic.

  • RF Mesh for Distribution Automation:
  • The deployment of reclosers (in MV grid) with RF Mesh technology that communicates with primary substations
  • At LV level, the deployments of RF Mesh smart meters allow us to identify where, when and which customers are out of power. What is the performance of a RF Mesh in disturbed network?
  • We will have further information from our secondary substations using RF Mesh technology as a backbone. We want also to evaluate a RF Mesh solution face to GPRS solution;
  • RF Mesh and PLC Prime for AMI:
  • Some secondary substations will communicate with smart meters using PLC Prime, and with primary substations using RF Mesh
  • A major advantage is to allow us to better prepare our communication infrastructures to new services (e.g.: Demand Response).

    WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
