Brigadier General Brendan Cook

Brigadier-General Brendan Cook has had a notable career in the Royal Canadian Air Force since joining in1991. He graduated from Royal Roads Military College with a Bachelor of Science degree and later earned a Master of Physics in Underwater Acoustics.

His early career included roles as an Acoustic Sensor Operator and Acoustics Research Officer. Promoted to Major in 2008, he served in various strategic roles, including at the Strategic Joint Staff at NDHQ Ottawa, Western Hemisphere Operations, J3 Coordination.In 2014, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and commanded 405 Squadron, during which he deployed to Op IMPACT leading operations in Iraq, earning the Meritorious Service Medal. He later managed Maritime Air Requirements as Director of Air Requirements for the RCAF and was promoted to Colonel in 2018. In 2019, he graduated from the United States Air War College and commanded 14 Wing Greenwood. He served as a Battle Director in Qatar in 2021 and later became Special Advisor to the Chief of Defence Staff. Promoted to Brigadier-General in 2023, he currently serves as Director General Space, Combat and Support

Colonel A.J.  Ashby

Colonel A.J. Ashby is the Senior Materiel Leader for the Acquisition Delta Strategic SATCOM Division, Space Systems Command, Los Angeles Air force Base, CA. In this role, he leads 100+ military, government civilians, and contractors in the development and acquisition of our nation’s most critical strategic space capabilities. His $20B portfolio includes the Evolved Strategic SATCOM and Enhance Polar Systems recapitalization Programs.

Colonel Ashby enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1990 and received his commission after completing Air Force Officer Training School in 2001. He transferred to the U.S. Space Force in 2021. Col Ashby served in numerous acquisition and operations leadership assignments within the Department of the Air Force, Joint Staff, and National Reconnaissance Office. He is also an experienced Special Missions Unit operator with multiple global contingency and humanitarian deployments with 5,300 hours in a variety of aircraft with 133 combat missions. Prior to his current position he served as the Division Chief for Space Sensing and Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications, within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration, Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Colonel Ian Fletcher

Col Ian Fletcher is currently commander of II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group. In this role, he leads a diverse team of Military and Civilian professionals responsible for generating, employing, and modernizing Marine Corps Information Warfare and Multi-Domain capabilities (C5ISRT) in direct support of II Marine Expeditionary Force, its subordinate Marine Air Ground Task Forces (MAGTFs) and the Joint Force. His elements connect the MAGTF to the Joint Response and Shaping Enterprise. Previously, Col Fletcher served as the Director of Combat Develop, Capability Integration and Resourcing for the Marine Corps’ Special Operations Component Command, and as the Director of Intelligence for Security Assistance Group – Ukraine.

Colonel in General Staff Ludovic Monnerat is the J5 and at the same time Head of the Space Domain of the Swiss Armed Forces. He is the founder of this new organization for space and is leading it since its inception in 2017. He has been Chief Trainer of the joint operational staff during 8 years, Head of the Special Operations Section of the same staff during 8 years as well, and member of the Information Operations Section during 2 years. In the militia (reserve) system of the Swiss Armed Forces, he commanded a Special Forces Battalion and an Infantry Company, and was the Chief of Staff of the Joint Special Operations Center during 8 years.

 

Colonel Mietta Groeneveld

Colonel Mietta Groeneveld

Colonel Mietta Groeneveld is the Director of the NATO Command & Control Centre of Excellence (C2COE). The C2COE provides NATO with expertise in Command and Control, currently focusing on the development of NATO Multi-Domain Command and Control, the transformation of operational level headquarters driven by technology and MDO, and the cultural change of future decision makers.

 
Since joining the military in 1986, Colonel Groeneveld has occupied a range of command and staff positions across the technical, operational, and strategic levels. She earned a Master’s degree in Applied Physics and, in 2014, completed both the Canadian National Security Program (NSP6) in Toronto and the EU High-Level Course on Security & Defence.
 
Following these achievements, she has held several positions at the international strategic level. In the immediate aftermath of the Russian invasion of Crimea, she was the Branch Head for Multilateral Military Affairs. She also served as the Netherlands’ representative on the NATO Logistics Committee and the Committee on Standardisation. Furthermore, she was the Chair of the board for the BENELUX Arms Control Agency and the NATO CIMIC COE, as well as a board member for the Strategic Airlift Capability C-17 and the Movement Coordination Centre Europe (MCCE) and Chairmen of AFCEA The Hague.
 
Colonel Groeneveld’s deployments include a 2002 mission to Kyrgyzstan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and a 2017-2018 tour in Afghanistan, where she was CJ4/EF5 of the Training and Advisory Command-North and held the NLD-SNR/red card for the Resolute Support Mission.

Colonel Vadym Slyusar has almost 40 years of research experience in the areas of information systems, wireless communications and AI. He earned Ph.D. in 1992, Doctor of Sciences in 2000, Professor in 2005, Honored Scientist and Technician of Ukraine in 2008. The scientific portfolio includes 71 patents, almost 1000 publications in these areas (98 publications was included in SCOPUS (Author ID 7004240035) and 470 publications included in ORCID 0000-0002-2912-3149). He is authority in digital signals processing, AI technologies and other areas. Since 2009 - a Member of Editorial Board of Journal "Radioelectronics and Communications Systems". Scientific advisor of 16 PhDs (candidates of technics) and 2 Doctors of Science.

Don Brown

Don Brown

 Don Brown is a longtime resident of Washington. In over 30 years developing commercial space systems, he has held leadership roles at Panamsat, Intelsat, Telesat and, currently, at Amazon’s Project Kuiper. Most recently, Don was the General Manager of Telesat U.S. Services, LLC. Don was the co-founder of USA TODAY Sky Radio, the first satellite delivered inflight broadcast service, and was the President of QRadio, a streaming music/technology service developed by Quincy Jones to create new audiences for 

African music. Don is now a senior executive with Project Kuiper, the LEO satellite network of 
Amazon.com. Don’s focus is Global Government Solutions for Project Kuiper.
 
Don Brown has led teams which developed the Telesat “Blackjack/Croupier” satellite for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Cisco “IP Router in Space” (“IRIS”) payload on Intelsat IS-14, launched in November 2009, and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) UHF payload, launched on Intelsat IS-22 in 2012, among others. The ADF Hosted Payload was named by “Via Satellite” magazine as 
one of the “30 Events that Shaped the Last 30 Years in Satellite.” 
 
Since August 2020, Don Brown has been a member of the Space Enterprise Advisory Group (“SpEAG”) supporting Space Systems Command (SSC), U.S. Space Force. SpEAG is a group of 10-15 senior industry officials and former flag officers supporting the U.S. Space Force as it accelerates and increases its engagement with the commercial and international space industry. Don Brown has also served on the Satellite Task Force of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee to the President of the United States and as Co-Chair of the Government Services Working Group of the Satellite Industry 
Association. He is a graduate of Princeton University and is a frequent speaker on commercial satellite operations and national security. 
 
For many years, Mr. Brown has advocated for increased commercial space engagement in government systems. With Air Force Colonel Mike Moyles, he wrote a multi-part series for Space News entitled “Rethinking the Relationship: What’s the appropriate balance between government and commercial space industry for the next generation of satellite communications?” Mr. Brown founded the “Hosted Payload Alliance” and has participated in countless policy fora concerning commercial space. 
 
Don has been an active contributor to the performing arts in Washington and nationally. Don has served on the Board of Directors for the Washington National Opera, on the Executive Committee of the Glimmerglass Festival Board of Directors, and currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Seattle Opera.

He has written widely on these subjects for a range of specialist and general publications. He also works as a consultant and adviser in these areas for several leading government and private sector clients. Furthermore, Dr Withington provides regular commentary on security and defence aspects of electromagnetic spectrum use for major media organisations around the world.

Heinrich  Krispler

After joining the Austrian military in 1985, Colonel Heinrich Krispler graduated from the Austrian Military Academy as a signal officer in 1989. He then served as a platoon commander, company commander and staff officer in the Austrian Armed Forces Signal and Electronic Warfare Regiment. Subsequently, he was the deputy system engineer officer in the Air Surveillance Brigade and was then deployed to develop concepts and strategies for the overall transformation of the Austrian CIS/Cyber Forces within the Ministry of Defence. 

He was then appointed to be the Head of the CJ6 directorate of the Austrian Joint Forces Command, a position he held for more than 9 years. Since May 2015, Colonel Krispler has been the Deputy Director for CIS and Cyber Defence as well as the Branch Chief for CIS and Cyber Defence Policy and Requirements in the EU Military Staff where he is primarily responsible for strategic planning and advice, concept and capability requirements development for CSDP military operations and missions. 
 
Currently Col KRISPLER is the European Defence Agency SatCom Projects Manager, providing governmental and commercial SatCom Support to EU member states, and CSDP actors. Colonel Krispler has 3 academic master degrees in the areas of Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology and Information Management.

Helen Weedon is Managing Director of the Satcoms Innovation Group (SIG) which is dedicated to promoting innovation within the satellite industry. Helen has been involved with SIG since 2011, previously supporting the group with marketing, PR, and admin activities. Helen has over 20 years’ experience within the satellite and broadcast industries. She is the founder of Radical Moves, a specialist PR and Marketing agency. Helen is fluent in French and German, with a good knowledge of Welsh and a basic knowledge of Dutch and Spanish. Helen regularly addresses the industry on the challenges faced by the satellite industry and the innovative approaches needed to resolve them.

Irina Petrov

Irina Petrov

Irina is a senior satellite industry executive with vast experience and expertise in marketing, public relations, business strategy and planning, having worked for non-profit, start-ups and blue-chip companies.

Following the combination of GSOA and GVF, Irina maintained her role, heading marketing, communications, and membership services in the only global satellite industry association, with members from the entire industry ecosystem. She has led many of the association’s successful initiatives – branding and online strategies, including the highly acclaimed Webinar Series, enabling GVF to notably increase the services offered members, growing it into a stronger satellite community.

Prior to joining GVF, Ms Petrov was the Vice President, Marketing for Onlime Group, a global service provider of premium business communications. She has also worked with the several satellite operators in various marketing positions – Avanti, Intelsat, PanAmSat and Europe*Star.

Irina started her career in satellite as a journalist/editor in the industry magazine, after serving with the United Nations Military Observers as an interpreter and language assistant, wounded in the line of duty.

Jessie Hamill-Stewart is a Cyber Security (TIPS-at-Scale) CDT (PhD) candidate at University of Bath and University of Bristol. She investigates the cyber resilience of space infrastructure through multidisciplinary research, which combines technical analysis of cyber attacks and more qualitative approaches such as document analysis and interviews.

Lieutenant General Douglas Schiess

Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Schiess is the Commander, U.S. Space Forces - Space; and United States Space Command’s Combined Joint Force Space Component Commander, Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. Lt. Gen. Schiess leads thousands of joint and combined personnel across 50 tactical units with a mission to plan, integrate, conduct and assess global space operations in order to deliver combat relevant space effects in, from, and to space for combatant commanders, coalition partners, the Joint Force and the nation. Lt. Gen. Schiess plans and executes space operations through two command and control deltas and exercises operational control of assigned and attached U.S. Space Forces including all or portions of six operational deltas. Additionally, Lt. Gen. Schiess oversees two command and control deltas, and five distinct and geographically dispersed operations centers, including the Combined Space Operations Center at Vandenberg SFB, California; the National Space Defense Center at Schriever SFB, Colorado; the Missile Warning Center at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, Colorado; the Joint Overhead Persistent Infrared Planning Center at Buckley SFB, Colorado; and the Joint Navigation Warfare Center located at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.

 
Lt. Gen. Schiess entered the Air Force as a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1992 and transferred to the United States Space Force in 2022. He has commanded the 4th Space Operations Squadron at Schriever AFB, Colo.; the 45th Operations Group at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.; the 21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.; and the 45th Space Wing at Patrick AFB, Fla. He deployed to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, in support of operations Enduring Freedom, Resolute Support, and Inherent Resolve. His staff assignments include Headquarters Air Force Space Command, Headquarters Space Operations Command, the Air Staff and Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. Prior to his current assignment, General Schiess was the Commander, Combined Force Space Component Command and Vice Commander, Space Operations Command.

General Erwan ROLLAND was born on June 8th 1969 in Fontenay-aux-Roses. He is married and father of three. He went to the "Ecole Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan" (Special Military School, Army Academy) in 1990 (promotion Général Guillaume) and graduated as a "Transmission" (Signal Corps) Officer. After a year of formation at the "Ecole d'Application des Transmissions de Montargis" (Application School of Transmissions) (1993 – 1994), he picked the "Troupes de marine" (Marine Corps) and served as a Lieutenant for the "6ème régiment de parachutistes d'infanterie de marine" (Marine Paratroopers) in Mont de Marsan. He was deployed in Lebanon and ex-Yugoslavia. In 1996, he served in the "33ème régiment d'infanterie de marine" (Marine Regiment) in Martinique as chief of the signal company and deputy to the "Commandant interarmées des signals des forces armées aux Antilles (Joint Signal Commander of the Armed Forces in the Caribbean"). He was promoted to Captain in 1997. Moving to the "41e régiment de Signals" (Signal Regiment) in Senlis in 1998, he studies a course of the Captains in the USA before commanding the 3rd Company, with which he is deployed in Qatar and the UAE, in support of the "PC de Force de l'EMIA FE" (FE Joint Staff Force CP). In 2002, he went to the "Lycée Militaire d'Aix-en-Provence" (Military College), where he commanded the freshmen. He was promoted to "chef de bataillon " (Major OF-3) in 2004. After passing the Superior Military Teaching exam in 2004, he was deployed in Afghanistan. After that, he followed the "118th promotion of the Military Staff Class", then the "11th promotion of the Joint Defence College". Affected in 2006 to the "General Directorate for Information and Communication Systems", as editing officer in the "Sous-Direction de la Stratégie", he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel (Lt-Col OF 4) in 2007. He joined the "48th Signal Regiment" in 2009 in Agen to hold the position of "Chef of the Instruction and Operation Bureau". He was deployed in Lebanon in 2010 as Commanding Officer to the Joint Information and Communication Systems for the DAMAN operation theatre. In 2011, he was affected in Paris, to serve at the "Etat-major des Armées" (Defence Staff) as handling officer in the "Section Etudes Opérationnelle de la Division Emploi". He was promoted to Colonel (COL OF-5) on the same year. He commanded the "28th Signal Regiment" of Issoire from 2013 to 2015, with which he was deployed in Sahel, at the head of a Groupement de Transmissions Interarmées (Joint Signal Group) during Operation BARKHANE. From 2015 to 2016, he served at the "Service Conduite Opérations Exploitation" of the DIRISI (Joint Direction for Defense's Networks of Infrastructure and Information Systems). Alumnus to the "66th session of the High Military Studies Centre" and to the "69th session of the National Defence High Studies Institute" in 2016, he joined the "Division Cohérence Capacitaire" of the Armed Forces Staff in 2017. He was appointed "Operation Deputy General" of the "IC Systems Command of the Army" on August 1st 2020, and promoted to Brigadier General (BRIG-GEN OF-6) on September 1st 2020. From 2022 to 2023 he was appointed as France's MILREP to SACEUR in MONS, before joining again the DIRISI in August 2023 as Deputy Central Director, and promoted to "Général de division" (MAJ-GEN OF-7). From September 1st, 2024, he has been appointed as Central Director to the DIRISI and promoted to the rank of "Général de Corps d'Armée" (LT-GEN OF-8).

Lt. Gen. Philip A. Garrant is Commander, Space Systems Command, headquartered at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California. He is responsible for more than 15,000 military, civilian and contractor personnel worldwide and an annual budget of $15.6 billion, while managing the research, design, development, acquisition, launch, and sustainment of satellites and the associated command and control systems. His extensive portfolio includes military satellite communication, missile warning, navigation and timing, space-based weather, space launch and test ranges, space superiority, responsive space and other emerging evolutionary space programs.

Prior to Space Systems Command, Lt. Gen. Garrant served as the Deputy Chief of Space Operations, Strategy, Plans, Programs, and Requirements, and had the overall responsibility for the strategies, requirements, and budget of the United States Space Force.
 
Lt. Gen. Garrant received his commission from the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Maryland in 1991.  During his career, he has served in a variety of acquisition positions including Systems Engineer, Program Manager, Program Element Monitor, Squadron Commander, Senior Materiel Leader, Deputy Program Executive Officer and Program Executive.
 

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle enlisted as a soldier in the Army Reserves in 1987 before completing a Science degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy and graduating from the Royal Military College in 1992 into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. She was appointed to Chief of Joint Capabilities Group in July 2024, becoming the first female to lead a warfighting and operational domain.

 
Lieutenant General Coyle has worked at the tactical, operational and strategic level in a variety of command and staff appointments. She has commanded at every rank, including Commander Forces Command, Commander Joint Task Force 633 (CJTF633), Commander 6th Brigade, Commander Task Group Afghanistan and Commanding Officer 17th Signal Regiment. She has seen operational service as the J6 Communications on Operation CITADEL, and Officer Commanding 104th Signal Squadron on Operation ANODE, Deputy Commander – Afghanistan, transitioning into Deputy Commander JTF 636 on Operation SLIPPER / Task Group Afghanistan on Operation HIGHROAD, and CJTF633 on Operation ACCORDION. Key staff appointments include Head Information Warfare, Director Workforce and Behaviours - First Principles Review, Director Soldier Career Management – Army, Director of Studies Land at the Australian Command and Staff College, Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Army and Aide-de-camp to Commander Australian Theatre. 
 
Lieutenant General Coyle holds post-graduate qualifications in a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, a Master in Organisational Development and Strategic Human Resource Management from the University of New England, and a Master of Management in Defence Studies from the University of Canberra. She is an alumnus of the Harvard Advanced Management Program. 
 
Lieutenant General Coyle was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for Commander Joint Task Force 633, a Distinguished Service Medal as Deputy Commander JTF 636 / Commander Task Group Afghanistan on Operation SLIPPER / HIGHROAD, and a Conspicuous Service Cross as Commanding Officer 17th Signal Regiment. She has also received a Chief of Joint Operations Command Commendation as Officer Commanding 104th Signal Squadron on Operation ANODE, and a Commander Australian Theatre Commendation as Staff Officer to the Commander Australian Theatre Joint Intelligence Centre. Whilst posted to the United States, she received the U.S. Army Commendation Medal as the 11th Signal Brigade Satellite Engineer.

Brigadier General Halvor Johansen started his career in the Norwegian Army, and has a traditional signals officer background, finishing with serving two years as commander of the Norwegian Army’s Signal Battalion in 2010-2012. Brigadier General Johansen has served nine years in the Norwegian Special Operations Command, as a staff officer and as director of the Plans and Policy Branch, before assuming command of the CIS regiment of the Norwegian Armed Forces Cyber Defence in 2018. Brigadier General Johansen assumed command of the Norwegian Armed Forces Cyber Defence in june 2022. Brigadier General Johansen is educated through the Norwegian Army Officer’s academy and the Norwegian Armed Forces command and staff college, and has a masters degree in military studies from the Norwegian Armed Forces University College, as well as having attended NATO Defence College. Throughout his career, Brigadier General Johansen has also served in NATO operations in Kosovo and in Afghanistan. As chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces Cyber Defence, Brigadier General Johansen is responsible for CIS and ICT support to Norwegian Armed Forces, as well as for cyber defence and cyber security in the Norwegian Armed Forces and the defence sector in Norway.

 

Major General Pascal Legai

Major General Pascal Legai

Major General Pascal Legai has a military background (Major General in the French Air and Space Force, Ret). He acquired experience mainly in the fields of geography, imagery intelligence, international relations, Space and Security issues. He has extensive international experience in the geospatial information domain.

 
Before joining ESA, he was Director of the EU Satellite Centre, an imagery analysis centre, based near Madrid, Spain, providing Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) and Imagery Intelligence (IMINT) products and services to support the EU external action.
 
He has a PhD in International Relations, a qualification as Research Director, a law degree, several Master degrees in Imagery Processing, Computer Sciences, in History, in Irish Civilization, in Mathematics. He is an aerospace engineer and has also an Engineer Diploma in the field of the geographic sciences.
 

Major General Steven Butow

Major General Steven Butow

 Maj Gen Steve “Bucky” Butow, USAF, is the Military Deputy of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), Office of the Secretary of Defense.

General Butow joined the team in 2015 as an early plank owner when DIU was known as the Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx).  He initially served as  West Coast Military Lead and helped establish the organization’s operating locations in Silicon Valley, California; Boston, Massachusetts; and Austin, Texas.  In 2016, he was was selected as DIU’s first Space Portfolio Director.  Upon promotion to brigadier general, Butow continued this role at DIU as a DoD civilian.
 
General Butow continues to serve as the Commander of the California Air National Guard in a dual Title 10/32 status where he leads 4,900 Airmen assigned to five wings and a headquarters staff performing air, space and cyber operations as part of the Total Air Force.  He commanded the 129th Rescue Wing at Moffett Field, CA, from 2011 to 2014.
 
General Butow’s previous Title 10 leadership assignments include Deputy Director of the Joint Search and Rescue Center for U.S. Central Command in 2005, and as Chief of Personnel Recovery for U.S. Air Forces Central in 2007 supporting Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM.  Prior to joining DIU, Butow was the Vice Chief of the Joint Staff, California Military Department with responsibilities including cybersecurity, incident awareness and innovation. He has deployed ten times to support combat and contingency operations across Southwest Asia, the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and other global locations.  General Butow has more than 3,500 flying hours in T-37, T-38, C-130, HC-130 and MC-130P aircraft. 
 
Butow graduated from San Jose State University with a B.A. in Physics & Astronomy and earned a M.S. in Management with specialization in Air and Space Strategic Studies from the University of Maryland. He has also completed executive courses at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and was a member of the National Leadership Preparedness Initiative (NPLI) Cohort 16. Butow is a lifetime member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for academic achievement.
 
As a researcher with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, Butow worked on instrument concepts for Mars surface soil analysis at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. He later served as co-principal investigator for a series of airborne science missions for which he was recognized for outstanding achievement and contributions to the Space Science Division in 1999 and received an Ames Honor Award as a member of an Astrobiology Mission Project Team in 2000.

Mrs. Pinar Yasar Orten is a SATCOM professional who leads the efforts related to SATCOM technology roadmaps and bringing those technologies to NATO as Head of SATCOM Technology in NATO Communications and Information Agency Chief Technology Office (CTO).

 
She is part of CTO-STAR (Space Technology Adoption and Resilience) team, where the team deals with all space domain technology related matters in NCIA.
 
Having almost 2 decades of experience in the domain, Pinar joined the NCI Agency after working in defence industry over a decade. 
 
Her experience spans from design, development and acquisition of Electronic Warfare and SATCOM Systems for space, land, maritime and air domains as well as managing diverse engineering teams. Providing latest SATCOM technology to the Alliance, Pinar applies sound engineering principles using both traditional and innovative methods.
 
She has her B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering as well as M.Sc. in the same domain with a focus on electromagnetics and novel RF materials, which is one of the disruptive technologies and has published papers in this domain. She is alumni of NATO-wide Executive Development Program.
 
She is married and a proud mother to two children.

Samuel Visner

Samuel Sanders Visner serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center and as a Technical Fellow at the Aerospace Corporation. Sam is also a Senior Advisor to the Cybersecurity Solarium Commission. Sam served previously as Director of the National Cybersecurity Federally Funded Research and Development Center (MITRE), sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Sam is as a member of the Board of Directors of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities and also serves as a member of the Cyber Council of the Intelligence and National Security Alliance and the Cyber Committee of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. Sam served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he taught a course on cybersecurity policy, operations, and technology, and has also established a charitable trust for the University for the continued development of curricula in the study of information technology in international security. Sam is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Atlantic Council and is a former member of the Intelligence Community Studies Board. Sam is also a member of the Army Science Board. Sam served previously as Senior Vice President at ICF (Cybersecurity and Resilience), Vice President at CSC (General Manager, CSC Global Cybersecurity), Senior Vice President at SAIC, and as Chief of Signals Intelligence Programs at the National Security Agency, from which he received the Agency's highest award for civilian service in recognition of work done to transform the Agency’s signals intelligence infrastructure following 9/11.  Sam holds a bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in Telecommunications from the George Washington University.

Tom Goffus was appointed as Assistant Secretary General for Operations in January 2022. He advises the Secretary General on strengthening defence capabilities of NATO partners, preparing NATO for the defence of Alliance territory, and responding to crises. In October 2023, Tom Goffus was appointed as NATO Secretary General's Special Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism.

Prior to joining the NATO International Staff, he served as Policy Director on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy, National Security Staff Director for Strategic and Eastern European Affairs, and Senior Military Advisor for European and Eurasian Affairs at the State Department. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy, was commissioned in the Air Force, and flew the F-15, T-6, and T-37 aircraft.

Vice Admiral Dr Thomas Daum

Vice-Admiral Dr Thomas Daum joined the Bundeswehr as an officer candidate in 1981. After studying computer science at the Bundeswehr University in Munich and completing his naval officer education, he received first command assignments on seagoing units. From 1996 onwards, he took part in the two-year admiral staff officers’ training at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Hamburg.

 
His career as a senior officer was characterised by assignments at command headquarters and at the Federal Ministry of Defence, where he served in the areas of CIS support/C4ISR as well as concepts and capability analysis. He was also given command assignments at home and abroad, especially as commander of a fast patrol boat squadron, also on NATO operations.
 
He served as Head of the Information Technology Directorate at the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) from 2012 to 2015 and as Chief of Staff and Deputy General Manager as well as Chief Operating Officer of the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) in Brussels, Belgium, from 2015 to 2019.
 
After becoming Chief of Staff at the German Cyber and Information Domain Service Headquarters on 1 April 2019, Dr Daum was appointed as Chief of the Cyber and Information Domain Service on 25 September 2020.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
