Future Armoured Vehicles Power Systems

In light of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II last week and the forthcoming funeral and bank holiday taking place on Monday 19th September, the Future Armoured Vehicles Power Systems conference will be shortened to a one-day event on Tuesday 20th September. We will be including all planned presentations on the Tuesday to ensure you still receive maximum value from the conference and we appreciate your understanding. We look forward to welcoming you to the conference next Tuesday.

SAE Media Group is proud to present the Future Armoured Vehicles Power Systems 2022 conference, convening on the 20th September 2022 in London.

With the rate of technological innovations and applications only growing, power management considerations for the armoured vehicles of the future remains a vital component in maintaining the operational capacity of the world's armed forces. Power systems underpin a vast swathe of performance measures for armoured vehicles, both mechanically and electronically.

Initially, this can manifest through enhancing powertrains to maintain the efficiency and manoeuvrability of vehicles that are often considerably heavier than when designs were made, through improving current performance or developing new hardware. Further to this, the auxiliary electrical requirements of vehicles that resemble command and control hubs is significant. The development and integration of advanced C4I systems, to guarantee situational awareness in degraded environments, the application of power-hungry active protection systems to overcome the physical limits to traditional armour, and the future of Directed Energy Weapons, are all highly power-sensitive systems that offer a significant strain to traditional architectures.

As the only conference of its kind, Future Armoured Vehicles Power Systems, will provide unique briefings on the efforts being made to enhance current armoured vehicle performance, as well as an exploration of the developments and innovations being made in an effort to guarantee the long-term effectiveness of future forces. Briefings will include insights into vehicle architecture, powertrain considerations and developments, the electrification of future platforms, and the methods being employed that will power the system of systems required for operational excellence.

Brigadier (Ret.) Ian Cameron-Mowat

Former Head of Force Protection , British Army
Brigadier (Ret.) Ian Cameron-Mowat

Brigadier (Retd) Ian Cameron-Mowat works as an independent consultant in vehicle systems, electronic countermeasures, surveillance and counter-terrorism technology; he is also a founding director of CSB Defence, a consultancy company operating across a number of technology sectors in defence and security. In both roles, he helps companies to find opportunities and win business. He has spoken at or chaired conferences on vehicle survivability and situational awareness, robotics and autonomous systems, counter-drone and counter-IED.

Ian went into officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1983. As a Russian graduate, he had a busy Cold War. After that unexpected success, he alternated between mainstream Royal Signals appointments and posts in equipment capability, security and counter-terrorism in the UK and with the United Nations. Highlights of his earlier career including waking up on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall the morning after it came down, and spending his birthday with his Regiment up to his chest in the cold, muddy River Ouse when it flooded York in 2000.

His final seven years in uniform were spent, first as a colonel and finally as a brigadier, heading Special Projects and Force Protection teams in the UK MOD’s procurement organization, Defence Equipment and Support. Among other areas he was responsible for the UK’s counter-IED systems, force protection surveillance and active protection systems for armoured vehicles.

Outside work, his interests are fairly standard – travel, languages, military history, archaeology, dogs, shouting at the television, all that sort of thing.

    WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
