Aaron Stevenson

 Mr. Aaron Stevenson is the Branch Chief for Information Mobility under the Enterprise Requirements and Integration Division within the Space Systems Integration Office (SSIO). SSIO aligns, integrates and enables interoperable system of systems space capabilities to achieve a resilient and integrated space enterprise, deter competitor aggression and assure the uninterrupted delivery of all domain combat power. SSIO is the integrator for the national security space enterprise. Mr. Stevenson’s office is responsible for delivering the multi-year Information Mobility and Theater Effects capability plans, requirements and roadmaps for the Space Force’s major space mission areas: Space Domain Awareness, Combat Power, Tactical Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance, Space Based Environmental Monitoring, Military Satellite Communications, Missile, Warning, Tracking & Defense, and Position, Navigation & Timing.

Air Commodore (Bert) “Vidal” de Smit is currently Director Operations at the Royal Netherlands Air Force Headquarters.

Bert de Smit started his military career in 1990 at the Officers School at Woensdrecht Air Base. In 1992 he received his American Wings at Sheppard AFB, TX after completing the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program graduating top of his class. In 1993 he received his Dutch Wings after completing F-16 Initial Qualification Training in Tucson, AZ also graduating top of his class. As an F-16 pilot he started his flying career at 322 Fighter Squadron located at Leeuwarden Air Base. During the period 1995 to 1998 he was deployed multiple times to participate in missions over the Balkans, both in Peace Keeping as Peace Enforcing missions.

In 1998 the Royal Netherlands Air Force started its transition to the modernized Mid-Life Update F-16, in which he played an important role. He actively led the effort in drafting Tactics, Techniques and Procedures maximizing the use of this new capability. Subsequently, he played a crucial role in the first use of this capability during Mission Deliberate Force over Kosovo and Serbia.

After successfully completing the Dutch Weapon Instructor Course at Leeuwarden Air Base in 2001, he was assigned as Assistant Director Operations at 322 Fighter Squadron in the rank of major. As a weapons officer he was responsible for the squadron pilots Combat Readiness.

In the period 2002 – 2007 he was assigned to the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) located in Washington DC in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He held various positions during that period, in which he worked F-35 requirements and supported the Netherlands acquisition decision for procurement of the F-35.

In 2008 he graduated from the Senior Staff Officers Course at the Netherlands Defence College, gaining an Executive Master Degree in Security and Defence. He was assigned as Commander 312 Fighter Squadron at Volkel Air Base during the period 2008 – 2010. During that period he successfully led the squadron through a NATO Operational Evaluation, deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2009 and led a significant re-structure of the 1st Fighter Wing at Volkel Air Base

Air Vice Marshal DV Khot

Air Vice Marshal DV Khot

AVM Khot commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF in June 1998, graduating the IAF Academy with top honours. He has flown over 3100 hours on a variety of fighter and jet trainer aircraft.

He has served as Flight Commander of two fighter squadrons and was the first IAF officer to undergo Pilot Instructor Training in the USA, followed by a two year tenure as Instructor Pilot & Check Pilot with the USAF.

Hi staff appointments include that of Staff Officer to the AOC-in-C, Central Air Command, and two tenures at the Directorate of Personnel at Air HQ, New Delhi

Air Vice Marshal Paul Godfrey

Air Vice Marshal Paul Godfrey

Paul joined the Royal Air Force in 1991 and has been a fighter pilot for most of his career.  A weapons instructor on the Harrier and one of the first operational pilots on the Eurofighter Typhoon, he has flown on numerous operations and exercises with the RAF and undertook an exchange tour on the F-16 Fighting Falcon with the United States Air Force.  He was also privileged to be a Spitfire and Hurricane pilot on the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

 
Other roles have included Typhoon requirements management at Defence Equipment and Support in Bristol, capability management at the Ministry of Defence and operational programme management within the F-35 Lightning programme.
 
Between 2015 and 2017, Paul was Station Commander of RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland before moving to the Ministry of Defence as head of Carrier Enabled Power Projection, integrating F-35B fighters and Crowsnest helicopters with Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.  In 2020 he returned from Al Udeid airbase in Qatar, where he was responsible for the planning and employment of coalition air and space power across the Middle East as the Director of the USAF Combined Air and Space Operations Centre.  
 
Paul is the inaugural Commander of UK Space Command which stood up on 1 Apr 2021 at RAF High Wycombe. A Joint organisation, it draws from all three services as well as the civil service, industry, and academia. The Command is responsible for Defence Space Operations, Capability and Training.

 Angus was appointed Deputy Ambassador to the Czech Republic in September 2016. He previously served as Deputy Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia, Head of Mission in Benghazi and in various other international positions including in Kabul, Lashkar Gah and Musa Qal’eh.

At the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London, Angus served as Head of Expeditionary Diplomacy, Head of Hostile Environment Operations and, amongst a variety of other appointments, Deputy Head of Recruitment for the Diplomatic Service.
 
He joined the Foreign Office in 2006 following an initial career in the private sector.
 
He is now Head of Space Surveillance at the UK Space Agency
 

Betty Bonnardel-Azzarelli

Betty Bonnardel-Azzarelli

Betty is the chair of the UK chapter of the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) and a founding member of WOMENVAI. She holds two Master of Science degrees in Aeronautical and Space Engineering, and a Master of Business Administration. A Fellow and Chartered engineer, Betty is a recipient of a British MBE for her activities in STEM and diversity.

Betty is the CEO and founder of B Corp and award-winning AB5 Consulting, delivering innovative solutions in satellite, space, telecoms, and energy sectors. Her experience includes the management of complex international projects in the satellite, aerospace, and nuclear sectors.
 

Brendan S. Mulvaney

Brendan S. Mulvaney

Dr. Brendan Mulvaney is currently the Director of the China Aerospace Studies Institute at National Defense University. He was a Marine for a quarter of a century, where he flew more than 2000 hours as an AH-1W Cobra pilot, and was an Olmsted Scholar in Shanghai, China.  

He enlisted in 1991 and was commissioned in 1993 after graduating from UC San Diego. He earned his Master’s in Leadership from the University of San Diego in 2002, and was selected as one of three Marine Olmsted Scholars for 2003. He studied at Fudan University in Shanghai, China from 2003-2005 where he earned his Ph.D. in International Relations.
 
He served several tours in California, Iraq, Japan, and the Western Pacific. He served as the first Director of the Commandant’s Red Team, and supervised the implementation of Red Teaming in the Marine Corps. In 2013 he transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was the Associate Chair for the Languages and Cultures Department, and taught Mandarin Chinese, Chinese culture, and cross-cultural literacy.

Brig. Gen. Davide Cipelletti joined the Italian Air Force Academy In 1991. 

 
In 1996, he obtained the military pilot license at the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training School in Sheppard in Texas (USA). In 1996, he was assigned to the 32nd Wing of AMENDOLA where he attended the first operational conversion course on the AM-X aircraft. In 1997 he attained the Combat Readiness Fighter Bomber Attack (FBA) e Tactical Reconnaissance Fighter (TRF) qualifications for the AM-X aircraft and served as fighter-bomber and reconnaissance pilot at the 3rd Wing of VILLAFRANCA and the 51st Wing of ISTRANA, taking part in operational missions over the skies of the former Yugoslavia and Kosovo.
 
In 2000, he was selected to join the Experimental Test Flight Department and was qualified as Experimental Test Pilot in 2002 by the United States Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Base in CALIFORNIA (USA). His main testing programs include the operational certification of the AM[1]X Night Vision Goggles (NVG), the mid-life updates of the Tornado and AM-X aircrafts and the development of the T-346A advanced jet trainer, of which he was Chief Project Pilot and Operational Program Manager. Brig. Gen. CIPELLETTI was also the display pilot of the G-222 and C-130J aircrafts in 2004 and of the AM-X from 2005 to 2008, participating in numerous national and foreign air shows. After having held the positions of Head of Attack Aircraft Section, Flight Safety Officer, Head of Operations Service, Head of Test Service, Head of Operations Office, he took command of the 311st Group of the Experimental Flight Department in the years 2011-2012.
 
In October 2012 he was assigned to the 1st Office of the 3rd Department of the Air Force General Staff, where he was responsible for the aerospace assets planning process, the Libya and Afghanistan Operational Theaters Lessons Learned process, the capacitive evolution of the Joint Precision Strike fleet (JPS) of the Italian Air Force and the genesis of the Integrated Pilot Training System 2020. Over the years 2015-2016, he held the position of Deputy Head of the Space Office, dealing with the reorganization of the national meteorological sector and the development of suborbital flight, in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the National Agency for Civil Aviation (ENAC). From 2012 to 2016, he also held a second assignment under the 4th Department of the Air Force General Staff as Deputy Head of the T-346A Program Office, dealing with the phases of contracting, acquisition and introduction into service of the aircraft. In 2017 Brig. Gen. CIPELLETTI obtained the qualifications of NATO Public Affairs Officer and Crisis Communication specialist, working as Deputy Head of the Public Information Office under the Air Force Chief of Staff and, subsequently, under the Chief of the Italian Joint General Staff.
He took command of the 72nd Wing on July 3rd, 2019. After that, he qualified as Flight Instructor on TH-500B and AB-206 helicopters. Over this period, he was in charge for the implementation of the agreements that the Italian Air Force General Staff stipulated with the Italian Army and the National Fire Brigade Corps, over the joint and inter-agency use of the Helicopter Flying School.
 
He relinquished his post on September 21st, 2021 to take over the command of the Italian Bilateral Support Mission in the Republic of NIGER (MISIN) dealing with the training of the Niger Defense and Security Forces against terrorist threats, the increase of the national footprint in the Sahel area and the redeployment of Italian personnel operating in Mali as part of the Takuba Task Force.
 
In July 2022, he was assigned to the Italian Defense Joint HQ where he took up the post of Chief of the Space General Office from September 5th. 
 

Brigadier General Dennis Bythewood

Brigadier General Dennis Bythewood

Brig. Gen. Dennis O. Bythewood is Commander, Joint Task Force–Space Defense at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado. JTF-SD is one of two subordinate commands to the newly formed United States Space Command, with a mission to conduct space superiority operations, in unified action with mission partners, to deter aggression, defense space capability, and when directed, defeat adversaries throughout the continuum of conflict.

Brig. Gen. Bythewood received his commission in 1992 upon graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in electrical engineering. His career has spanned numerous acquisitions and satellite operations positions in the United States Space Force, Air Force Materiel Command and the National Reconnaissance Office. He has commanded space operations at the squadron and group level and led acquisitions as a squadron level Materiel Leader and three times as a wing equivalent Senior Materiel Leader.
 
Prior to his current position, Brig. Gen. Bythewood was the Director of Special Programs at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California.
 

Brigadier General Sami Nurmi

Brigadier General Sami Nurmi

 After Cadet School, Nurmi came to the Nyland brigade as a trainer when the signal equipment was to be modernized in Dragsvik. During the years 1992-1996 he worked as deputy company commander for the mortar company. He then was appointed battalion commander for the Ekenäs coastal battalion. After working as Director of Communications at the Ministry of Defence and as Head of National Defence Courses, Nurmi was appointed Director of the National Defence Unit at the Ministry of Defence. The unit belongs to the Defence Policy Department. Sami Nurmi's desk also includes voluntary defence work, which has become more popular among Finns after Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine. Nurmi's desk includes the steering of the MPK defence training. The Defence Policy Department's area of responsibility is to evaluate developments in the security and defence policy environment. The department prepares the bases for defence policy and the planning bases to be given to the Armed Forces. In practice, most of this work has focused on Ukraine and Finnish NATO membership. As part of his duties as Director of Unit, Sami Nurmi is also Head of Preparedness at the Ministry of Defence. Both in that role and in his previous roles, Nurmi has gained a solid experience of overall preparation of Finland. 

 

Captain (N) Jose Freitas

Captain (N), José Matias de Freitas (male) is a Navy Officer Commander graduated by the Naval Academy as a Weapons and Electronics Engineer. He served on board of various Portuguese navy war ships as a Weapon Engineer Officer (WEO) responsible for the performance and availability of the on-board weapons, sensors, Command Support Information Systems, combat, and communications systems. As Senior Engineer Officer supported the Executive Officer in resources management and information systems administration Ship Domain Administrator for IT. He was head of Weapon Systems Office for the Weapon and Electronic Systems Department at the Portuguese Navy - Technical Navy School and head of Communications and Cypher Department at Naval Communications Centre, being responsible for the transformation process in the naval communications infrastructures and implementation of main data center. After being deputy Director at Portuguese Navy IT and Communications Directorate, he was appointed as head of Planning and Programing Division, at the Portuguese MoD Directorate-General of National Defence Resources, since 2015 where he has been responsible for the coordination, monitoring and execution of Military Programming Law in the Armed Forces among other responsibilities, which includes the coordination of the implementing process of the Portuguese SST capability. Member of the EU-SST Steering Committee and PMO. He is the MoD representative at international forum, within UE, EDA, and NATO for the Space Domain (SATCOM, SST/SSA)

Captain (N) Phil Coope

Captain (N) Phil Coope

Phil joined the Royal Navy in 1993 having graduated from the University of Liverpool in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Twenty-eight years later he was delighted to accept the role of Deputy Head Space at UK Strategic Command, leading the Capability Development of Satellite Communications (SATCOM) and Position Navigation and Time. This is his second assignment in the Space Sector having previously worked as and Capability Manager for SATCOM and Programme Manager for Skynet 6.

Phil has been engaged in numerous major projects, notably delivery and acceptance of HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH Aircraft Carrier. He has also described the then future Royal Navy short-range air defence missile and radar systems, generated lifing policy for Defence ordnance, munition and explosives and contributed to the education of junior Royal Navy Officers at the Joint Services Command and Staff College.
 
Phil has served on T21, T22 and T23 class of Frigates and conducted UK and multinational operations in the North Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf. He also served in Hong Kong for territorial integrity and anti-smuggling operations and conducted media operations in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
 

Charlotte Gerhart

Charlotte Gerhart

Ms. Charlotte Gerhart is the Chief, Tactical SATCOM Acquisition Delta, Military Communications and Position, Navigation, and Timing (MilComm & PNT) Directorate, Space Systems Command, Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB), CA. She is responsible for the acquisition, production, and fielding of tactical satellite communications capabilities for the Nation’s warfighters.

In 1998, Ms. Gerhart joined the civil service supporting the US Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate. In this assignment she was responsible for managing the development and demonstration of space system technologies including thermal systems, structural systems, vibro-acoustic suppression, and laser communications systems.
 
In 2009, Ms. Gerhart moved to be the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) program as the manager of the WGS 7-10 program (also known as WGS Block II Follow-on), and later served as the Deputy Program Manager for the WGS program.  From 2013 through 2018 she served as the WGS Program Manager delivering four satellites into operations, with two more in work.
 
In 2022, Ms. Gerhart transitioned to the newly formed MilComm & PNT Directorate and assumed leadership of the Tactical SATCOM Acquisition Delta.  She has responsibility for the production and fielding of WGS 11+, the rapid acquisition and fielding of Protected Tactical SATCOM (PTS) Rapid Prototype payloads, Protected Tactical Enterprise Service (PTES) Rapid Prototype, Army & Air Force Anti-jam Modem (A3M), Air Force Wideband Enterprise Terminal (AFWET), and Enterprise Management and Control (EM&C).
 

Chris Badgett

Chris Badgett

Mr. Chris Badgett is vice president of technology for Kratos Space.  Prior to Kratos, Mr. Badgett served in the Air Force as a weapons engineer in the Air Force Research Lab. Chris has also worked in the Space Development and Test Wing as a program manager for a satellite system developed by Ball Aerospace.  Mr. Badgett holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Tennessee and an MS in Space Systems from the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Christopher Johnson

Christopher Johnson

Christopher Johnson is the Space Law Advisor at the Secure World Foundation, and a Professor of Law (Adjunct) at the Georgetown University Law Center where he co-teaches the Space Law Seminar. He is also a Faculty Member at the International Space University and a Member of the International Institute of Space Law. Mr. Johnson has written widely on space law and policy issues, and represents the Secure World Foundation at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). 

 
Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor's of Art degree from Michigan State University, a Juris Doctor from New York Law School, and an Advanced Masters in Law in Air and Space Law from Leiden University’s International Institute of Air and Space Law (IIASL). He also has professional certificates from New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice, the European Centre for Space Law, the Hague Academy of International Law, and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL). 
 
Mr. Johnson is also a Core Expert and Rule Drafter in the MILAMOS project, an observer at the Hague International Space Resources Governance Working Group, a Field Editor at the Journal of Space Safety Engineering, on the Board of Editors of the journal Air and Space Law, on the Academic Review Board of the Cambridge International Law Journal, and serves on the US Board of Directors of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC).
 

Colonel (Ret'd) Jennifer Krolikowski

Colonel (Ret'd) Jennifer Krolikowski

Colonel (ret) Jennifer Krolikowski most recently served as the Chief Information Officer for Space Systems Command, the acquisition arm of the United States Space Force.  In her first assignment, she served as a project engineer in the Manufacturing Technology Directorate at Wright Labs.  After receiving a Master’s in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Jennifer was assigned to the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron and accumulated 50+ flying hours in the B-52.  She moved to the GPS Joint Program Office where duties included Executive Officer; Branch Chief, GPS III Acquisitions; and Air Force Program Executive Office’s GPS Staff Director.  Col Krolikowski taught at the National Security Space Institute and became their Deputy Director for Mission Support.  At HQ Air Force Space Command, she served as Chief, Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) Requirements.  After graduating Air Command and Staff College, Jen consecutively worked as the Tactical Data Network Program Element Monitor; Deputy, Command and Control Division; and Chief, Executive Action Group under the Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisitions.  She commanded as Materiel Leader of an ACAT I program, Base IT Infrastructure.  Upon graduating Air War College with her third Master’s degree, Col Krolikowski became Branch Chief, Integrated Air and Missile Defense Global Requirements on Joint Staff.  She then promoted to Military Assistant for DASD/Space, Strategic, and Intelligence Systems, Office of the Secretary of Defense.  She commanded as Senior Materiel Leader for Space C2, establishing the USSF’s premier software factory, Kobayashi Maru.

 COL White is a senior satellite engineer serving with the Australian Military for over 20 years and Commercial Satellite Industry. He has deployed on several operations and recently returned with the last Australian contingent in Afghanistan. COL White recently joined the newly formed Defence Space Command being selected to lead the Australian Defence Force SATCOM capabilities.

COL White is a soldier at heart and understands the war fighter. His passion is to reshape the Australia Defence Force with the most modern telecommunications systems to increases the already effective Australian war fighter. He has successfully delivered several major telecommunications projects including Joint Project 2072 2B, ahead of schedule and budget delivering a fully integrated software defined network for the tactical environment. He has also delivered Australia’s first satellite on move capability integrated with the Bushmaster PMV.

Col. David A. Pheasant is the commander of Space Delta 8. DEL 8 is mission-focused encompassing Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) and Satellite Communications (SATCOM).

 
Col Pheasant, an inter-service tranfer to US Space Force from the Army, enlisted in the Army Signal Corps as a computer programmer/systems analyst before entering ROTC where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Texas as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps with a branch detail to the Infantry. Additionally, he maintains several commercial IT certifications to include CISSP, CISM, CEH, SEC+, and ITIL.
 
Prior to his current assignment, Col Pheasant was the commander of the 53d Signal Battalion (SATCON) and the acting commander of the Satellite Operations Brigade. Col Pheasant was initial cadre in the first Stryker Brigade (3/2 ID) serving consecutively as an Infantry Platoon Leader, Battalion S6, Signal Company Commander, and Battalion Executive Officer; during which he deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After attending Advanced Civil Schooling, he served as the Brigade S6 for 3/1 CAV as they closed out Operation New Dawn in Iraq.
 
Col Pheasant’s recent assignments include serving as the Deputy Army Capability Manager for Cyber at the Cyber Center of Excellence where he developed offensive and defensive cyber capabilities for the Army and Joint forces.  Mr. Cordell DeLaPena is the Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Military Communications (MilComm) & Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), Space Systems Command, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California. As the PEO, he manages and oversees development, production, delivery, and maintenance of critical and innovative Communications and PNT systems worth more than $22.3 billion. He is responsible for multiservice, multinational systems, as well as the training and equipping of more than 1800 military and civilian personnel.

 
Mr. DeLaPena entered the Air Force in 1985 after receiving his commission through Officer Training School.  From 1985 to 2014 he has served in a variety of acquisition and leadership positions within the Air Force and National Reconnaissance Office.  In 2014, he retired from active duty in the rank of Colonel and entered civil service as a member of the Senior Executive Service.  As the director of the Program Management and Integration Directorate he advised the Air Force Program Executive Officer for Space on weapon system management, acquisition, integration and analysis.

Mr. Darren Buck serves as Liaison to Air Force and Space Force, for Department of Defense (DoD) Executive Agent for DoD Mission Partner Environment (MPE), Mission Partner Capabilities Office (MPCO). As a member of the Executive Agent Division, he operates on behalf of the Secretary of the Air Force for Governance, Strategy, Integration, Resources, Requirements, and Strategic Engagement in support of DoD MPE. In his Liaison role, Mr. Buck engages, facilitates, and advises Air Force and Space Force leaders, offices, and programs to build and strengthen connectivity, information sharing, and interoperability with US Allies and DoD Mission Partners.

 
Darren Buck has served over thirty years in the Reserve of the Air Force, and he remains in service as a Colonel, assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration. Colonel Buck received his commission in 1990 through the Air Force ROTC program of the University of Notre Dame. He has served in a number of space operations and leadership assignments at 50th Space Wing, 45th Space Wing, 595th Space Group, 460th Space Wing, and 310th Space Wing. Further, he has accumulated over 19 months’ command experience in Joint and Interagency space operations and is a fully-qualified Joint Officer (JQO Level III). 
 
Immediately preceding his entrance into Federal Service as a Department of the Air Force Civilian in April 2021, Colonel Buck served as the Deputy Director for Air, Space, and Information Operations, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command, Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. Deanna Ryals

Ms. Deanna L. Ryals is the Director, International Affairs, Space Systems Command, Los Angeles AFB, CA. In this role, she is responsible for driving innovative partnerships with Allies, InterAgencies, and Industry to build a joint robust and resilient military space enterprise that is “Allied by Design”. Ms. Ryals is the USSF lead in developing and executing space FMS and shapes the use of armaments cooperation to set the conditions for an allied inclusive space architecture in accordance with Department and Service strategic guidance.

Ms. Ryals entered federal government service in 1988, and for more than 25 years, she supported the DoD in both civil service and industry in financial management and acquisition. In 2000, Ms. Ryals moved to the Secretary of the Air Force staff in the Space Acquisition Directorate and managed a MILSATCOM terminal portfolio worth $10B, then took over as the single SAF/AQS focal point for international activities. In 2012, Ms. Ryals moved to the Air Force Program Executive Officer for Space Launch (AFPEO/SL) as the PM for Acquisition Strategy development and secured DoD Acquisition Executive approval of a new acquisition strategy for future DoD NSS launches that introduced a competitive environment for all certified U.S. launch service providers. Ms. Ryals rejoined MILSATCOM in January 2013 with her transition to Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC). After being named SMC’s Chief Partnership Officer in 2018, Ms. Ryals ascended to her current role as Director, Int’l Affairs with the stand up of Space Systems Command in August of 2021.

Dr Chiara Palla has been working as Project Manager at MDA UK since February 2020. She currently manages multiple projects focusing on the design and development of space sensors for exploration and on-orbit servicing missions, space-based communication technology and photonics payload. Her day-to-day job involves interactions with diverse teams, international space agencies, commercial customers and suppliers to ensure the programs are timely delivered.

Chiara also gained a Management and Leadership apprenticeship from CMI (Chartered Management Institute), while working at MDA.
 
She is co-lead for the non-profit organization WIA-Europe UK, which is committed to promoting female talent and leadership across all levels of the European aerospace sector. 
 
Previously (2017-2020) she worked at the Space Magnetometer Laboratory of Space Physics group at Imperial College London as Space instrument engineer for Magnetometer payload on ESA RadCube Cubesat, Lagrange (now known as Vigil) and JUICE missions.
 
She holds a PhD from Cranfield University (2017) specialising in Space Debris Mitigation technologies for de-orbiting, during her doctorate she took part to ESEO (ESA Students Earth Orbiter) satellite as well as to the ESA Cleansat study. During the PhD, she also worked as part time President for the Cranfield University Student Association.
 
Her background is in Aerospace engineering and holds a MSc and a BSc from University of Padova in Italy.

Dr Joanna Hart

Joanna thrives on bringing people together to address complex challenges and deliver change. The Space Partnership equally represents industry, academia and government, enabling shared priorities to identified and collective action agreed so that the ambition contained within the National Space Strategy. Director is delivered. Joanna started in the role in March 2023 after nine years working across the space and innovation ecosystems, first at the Satellite Applications Catapult and then at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC, part of UK Research and Innovation). 

As the Harwell Space Cluster Development Manager, Joanna worked with stakeholders to grow the Cluster from 80 organisations to over 100 today that collectively employ over 1,400 people (up from 800 in December 2017). As STFC’s Skills Factory Director, Joanna led the development of STFC’s Skills Factory proposal to address national technical skills shortages, resulting in a doubling of the STFC apprenticeship scheme. 
 
With a first career in investment banking at UBS and Credit Suisse, a PhD in particle physics, Joanna has a strong financial and scientific background.

 Dr Mamatha Maheshwarappa is Payload Systems Lead at the UK Space Agency (UKSA). She provides technical leadership on various UKSA programmes and projects, by offering technical oversight/assurance. Also, the technical lead on UKSA’s initiative on Space Based Solar Power (SBSP). Before this, she was the technical lead on SPEQTRE (Space Photon Entanglement Quantum Technology Readiness Experiment) satellite project and has worked on ESA's Sentinel 4 & 5 test campaigns at RAL Space. Mamatha has worked on transceivers for ExoMars and Lunar Polar Sample Return projects while at QinetiQ. She has a PhD in Software Defined Radios for Multi-Satellite Communications from the University of Surrey, UK. She was the technical lead for STUDSAT-1, India’s first pico-satellite, launched by Indian Space Research Organisation, listed in the Limca Book of Records. Mamatha is the co-chair of the Women in Aerospace UK committee representing UKSA.

He currently the Head of ‘SPACE and CYBER’ Office at the Directorate of Defence and represents Luxembourg in different European initiatives (at EDA, ESA or EU Commission level) and is the national representative for the NATO SatCom capability team meetings. He is also engaged in many bilateral developments with NATO Allies.
 
As Head of Office, he advises the Minister of Defence and his Chief of Staff on numerous occasions when meeting international leaders and stakeholders from different sectors.
 
He started his career in 1996 as Officer in the Belgian Ministry of Defence and in 2002, his first position was Head of a Network Supervision team. In 2007, he started managing the service in charge of the satellite communication hub for the Belgian MoD. After three years in this function, he became SatCom Program Manager for the Belgian Defence. In 2012, after a one-year staff course, he joined the 4th Group Communications and Information Systems as Officer ‘Operations & Training’. In 2015, he became Major (OF-3) and went back to the procurement service of the Belgian Defence as Head of the Cell C³ Platforms Integration.
 
Mr Beaudot attended the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, Belgium and graduated with a Master of Engineering, Telecommunications. He is born in 1978, is married with three children. He grew up in Belgium, used to practice sports and is an active member of the scout movement.

He is currently the chief Satellite Communications and International Partners for USSPACECOM J36.  He has served in Army, industry, and government civilian roles in satellite communications payload and transmissions operations, design, systems engineering, testing, requirements, analysis, and policy. He started in SATCOM in payload and transmissions management during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, later stood up the Wideband Global SATCOM constellation, multiple satellite control facilities, led the performance effectiveness analysis working group for the Department of Defense’s wideband communications services analysis of alternatives, and sponsored, led, or been a core member of many Capabilities Based Assessments, Joint Capabilities Technologies Demonstrations, operational assessments, program development and fielding, Operational Plan development, and operationalization of capabilities across the joint force.

Katherine is a non-executive director, strategic advisor, and former CEO of the UK Space Agency. She chairs the Global Network on Sustainability in Space – which brings together scientists, industry leaders and policy makers in partnership to tackle the rising challenges of space debris and congestion.

Katherine has over 20 years’ executive experience in business innovation, start-up and expansion in the UK, Europe, and other geographies. Over nearly 15 years as a Senior Civil Servant with the UK government, she developed and implemented high-profile government policy in areas ranging from critical national infrastructure to industrial strategy. She led several landmark technology-enabled transformation programmes and steered five cross-cutting pieces of legislation successfully through Parliament.
 
During her tenure as CEO of the UK Space Agency, Katherine opened the UK market to commercial spaceflight; modernised the UK’s space regulatory frameworks; directed the Agency’s response to major global and domestic events, such as the Brexit referendum; and led €1.4bn investment in collaborative space missions through the European Space Agency.
 
Katherine is also a STEM Ambassador and the Founder of PrimarySpace.org – a charity with the mission to inspire and engage as many primary school children and teachers as possible with STEAM subjects and careers.

She has a geological and Earth observation background and has worked in all facets of the sector. She is passionate about ensuring that the sector is welcoming and truly inclusive. One of her initiatives, of which she is most proud, is the national Space Placements in INdustry (SPIN) scheme, connecting bright and motivated students with placements in companies and other space organisations.

From December 2020 to August 2021 he held the position of Operations Commander. On August 24, 2021, he was recognized as FAP Inspector General. With Supreme Resolution No. 113-2021-DE of November 14, 2021, he is appointed as Chief of the General Staff of the FAP.
 
He holds the Bachelor's Degree and Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Administration. He has completed three Master's Degrees: in Strategic Management of Human Resources, Master's Degree in Public Management and Master's Degree in Naval Sciences. He holds the Degree of Doctor of Business Administration.

Lieutenant General Elanor Boekholt-O'Sullivan

Lieutenant General Boekholt-O’Sullivan joined the Armed Forces in 1996 as an air force officer at the KMA, after which she worked at the Military Intelligence and Security Service, as a platoon commander at the Dutch Defence Academy and as a staff officer of the deputy commander of the Air Force. 

In 2014 she was appointed head of the Air Force Innovation Centre AIR (Ambition, Innovation, Result) in Breda. This Air Force think tank focuses on current developments in the world and the question of how the Air Force should respond to them. With the goal being to bring about cultural changes within the Air Force. 
 
Boekholt took office in June 2016 as commander of Eindhoven Air Base as the first female air base commander in the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
 
She was then promoted to Commodore on July 1, 2018 as commander of the Defence Cyber Command. In this position, she was responsible for digital defence with associated attack and intelligence operations.
 
Subsequently, Boekholt-O'Sullivan was promoted to Major General and took office as Deputy Air Force Commander.
 
Elanor was promoted to Lieutenant General in May 2022, making her the first woman in this rank within the Dutch Armed Forces. She now fulfils the position of Deputy Director-General for Policy (DGB) in The Hague

 After serving over 25 years in the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF), Bart van den Einden joined EUROCONTROL in the Civil – Military Cooperation Division in 2017. His domain of expertise covers the Ground/Ground and Aeronautical Satellite & Terrestrial Voice and Datalink Communications including Radio Frequency Spectrum management. He is member of the ICAO Communications Panel – Data Communications Infrastructure Working Group (former Aeronautical Communications Panel) and several EUROCAE groups drafting technical specifications for avionics. He was part of the EUROCONTROL team supporting the Horizon 2020 research activity on Air Traffic Management within SESAR2020 Solution 107 on Next Generation Satellite Communications and did support the European Commission Research Executive Agency on bid evaluations for Horizon 2020 SPACE-2019 ENTRUSTED (Governmental Satellite Communications). Bart is a veteran and is a RNLAF reserve officer (Major) with a background in Radar systems and Communications & Information Systems, and while still on active duty his assignments were with the NATO Allied Air Command, Ground based Air Defence systems, Defence Material Command and as staff Officer in the RNLAF Air Command. In his last assignment within C4ISR at RNLAF Air Command he was responsible for the introductions of the Satellite Communication capabilities for the Wing- and Squadron Operations at the RNLAF Rotary Wing Command. He was involved in the introduction for Satellite Communications for the RNLAF fleet of F-16s and initiated the engagement with the Netherlands Administration responsible for Radio Frequency Spectrum and slot allocations for satellites under responsibility of the Kingdom of the Netherlands: the first Netherlands Ministry of Defence owned and operated satellite, the BRIK-II was launched in 2021.

Major Aaron James Russell is a qualified and experienced Chartered Engineer. With over 22-years of experience in military telecommunications networks he now sits as the Operations lead for Land and Air customers. Additionally, he is a member of the team that reviews user requirements to design and deliver an End-to-End COMSAT/MILSAT solutions for customers in defence and across government for UK and global operations.

Prior to his current role Aaron was a Technical Officer Telecommunications, managing the design and delivery of globally deployable headquarters and their associated reach-back bearers. In his early career he spent time working in satellite ground terminal engineering, electronic warfare, and electronic countermeasures.

Additionally, Aaron is the Executive Committee Chair for The Institution of Engineering Technology’s Internet of Things Technical Network, a STEM Ambassador and Professional Registration Advisor.

Maj Gen de Villiers was born in Despatch, in the Eastern Cape, and completed her Grade 12 at Despatch High School.  She joined the SAAF in 1987 as an Air Traffic Controller, and also qualified in 1991 as a Mission Controller.  During her career in the SAAF she held posts at AFB Langebaanweg, LASS, BACS, AF C&CS and at DC&CS.  In 2009 she was promoted to the rank of Colonel and appointed as SSO ATM.  This was followed by her appointment in 2013 as OC AF C&CS.  In 2016 she was appointed as Director Military Aviation Regulations and Policies, and promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.  In June 2020 she was appointed as Deputy Chief of Joint Operations and promoted to the rank of Major General.

 
During the course of her career, Maj Gen de Villiers completed all the required developmental courses, including the Executive National Security Program where she won the trophy for the best Research Paper.  She also completed all her functional courses as an Air Traffic Controller and became the first SAAF member to be registered as a Qualifications Development Facilitator at the QCTO.  She was the lead player involved in overseeing the redesign of developmental training in the SAAF under Project ROSE.

 Major General (MGEN) Hans Folmer was appointed Chief of Staff of the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) as of 3 March 2022. In his role, MGEN Folmer acts as the NCI Agency’s senior military officer and provides oversight of day-to-day activities, while ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the Agency’s functional support elements.

From summer 2018 until 2021, he served in NATO as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the NATO CIS Group (NCISG) in Mons, Belgium. In this period, he was also appointed acting SHAPE Deputy Chief of Staff Cyberspace for an extended length of time.

In June 2015, he became the first Commander of the Netherlands Defence Cyber Command, having previously commanded the Cyber Task Force from 2011 to 2015. During that time, MGEN Folmer was responsible for the implementation of the cyber programme for the Armed Forces of the Netherlands.

From 2010 to 2011, MGEN Folmer was Chief Joint C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) requirements at the Dutch Ministry of Defence, Directorate for Operational Policy, Requirements and Planning. Prior to this role, he was the Chief of the European Union’s (EU’s) Operations Centre and Watchkeeping Capability in Brussels, Belgium. MGEN Folmer also chaired the Brussels Joint Coordination Team for the EU Supporting Action for African Union’s mission to Sudan (AMIS). From October 2006 until May 2007, he was the Military Assistant to the Commander, NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Regional Command (South) in Kandahar, Afghanistan. MGEN Folmer was the Commanding Officer of the bi-national CIS Battalion of the 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps from June 2004 until May 2007. With his battalion, he participated in NATO Response Force and won the General Fellgiebel prize for best German signal battalion. As liaison officer at Germany’s Bundeswehr Operations Command, from 2002 until 2004, he was involved in the planning of operations in Afghanistan,

in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Bosnia and the Persian Gulf. He has held previous positions such as Assistant Chief of Staff G4 of the Netherlands Mechanized Division and Senior Policy Advisor at the Army Directorate of Materiel, as well as Senior Project Manager on IT systems, communications, IT Architecture and Command and Control Systems.

Major General Karsten Stoye joined EUROCONTROL as Head of the Civil-Military Cooperation (CMC) Division and Military Advisor to the Director General on 1 October 2021.

He is responsible for leading and managing both military-military and civil-military cooperation and coordination with Member States’ military and civil authorities, as well as the EU institutions and NATO. His role involves working transversely to accommodate the integration of military requirements and civil-military ATM coordination needs across the Agency’s activities in support of regulation, and enhancement of the European ATM network including military needs and contribution to SESAR.

Prior to joining EUROCONTROL, Major General Stoye was the Chief of Staff at NATO Allied Air Command Headquarters.

General Stoye has accumulated considerable aviation experience across the full spectrum of operations including Commander of NATO’s Airborne Early Warning & Control Force E-3A Component, Deputy Commander of NATO’s Deployable Air Command and Control Centre in Poggio Renatico, Italy, Commander of the Tactical Reconnaissance Wing 51 ”Immelmann” and other Commands in the German Air Force as well as Commander of the Operation Wing Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan and various assignments in the Ministry of Defence as well as within NATO.

General Stoye has flown more than 3,000 flying hours primarily on the TORNADO weapon system, including more than 70 operational missions.

He studied economics and administrative science at the University of the German Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg, and in 1998 he graduated from the Command and General Staff Officer Course at the Federal Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Hamburg.

Major General Philippe Adam

Born on May 9, 1967 in Paris, married, Major General Philippe Adam can rely on a comprehensive technical and operationnal experience.

After being graduated engineer from the Ecole Polytechnique, he joined the French Air Force on August 31, 1988, and began his fighter pilot training. Awarded with his fighter pilot wings in 1990, he held various responsibilities in operational units on Mirage 2000C within the 1/12 "Cambrésis" fighter squadron, then as Flight Commander in the 2/12 “Picardie” fighter squadron. From 1993 to 1995, he was engaged in several operations in the Balkans and the Middle East.

Qualified as a test pilot in 1996, he was assigned to the French Flight Test Center in Istres, where he became Chief Test Pilot in 1999. After graduating from the French Joint War College in 2001, he came back to his previous responsabilities at the Flight Test Center in Istres. In 2003, he was assigned as operational advisor at the United Arab Emirates Flight Test Center.

Back in France in 2006, he served two years in the Capability Office of the Air Force Staff in Paris, in charge of the “Deterrence & Combat” division. From 2008 to 2010, he took command of the Istres Air Base, covering a major milestone with the commissioning of the ASMP-A nuclear weapon system.

After attending the National War College in Washington, D.C. in 2010-2011, he joined the NATO International Military Staff in Brussels as Deputy Chief of the “Air and Ballistic Missile Defense” Branch. In 2013, he was appointed deputy director of the Euro-Atlantic branch at the French Delegation for Strategic Affairs, in charge of supporting the defense minister for bilateral and multilateral meetings.

From 2015 to 2017, he was assigned to the Air Defense and Air Operations Command at Lyon Mont-Verdun Air Base 942, as commander of the National Air Operation Center. Promoted to Brigadier General in 2017, he then took command of the Air Operation Brigade, still at BA942. His responsibilities included command of the Barkhane Operation Joint Force Air Component. Then, on summer 2018, he was appointed deputy Joint Force Commander of the Barkhane Operation, in N'Djamena, Chad.

In 2019, he took command of the French Air Warfare Center in Mont-de-Marsan. He supervised the entry into service of the French armed "Reaper" as well as of the F3R standard of the “Rafale”. In 2020, he was appointed chief of the "Future Capabilities" division of the Joint Staff, in charge of planning the procurement of future equipment on behalf of the Joint Chief of Staff. He took command of the French Space Command on July 1st, 2022.

She holds a B.S. in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Purdue University with minors in international relations and environmental engineering.

Colonel Mark Gruenewald, USAF (ret.) is a US Government Civilian and serving as the Director, SATCOM Integrated Operations Division (SIOD) assigned to Peterson AFB CO. The SIOD is a geographically separated division of the Combined Space Operations Center, Vandenberg AFB CA. He has 25 years military and 4 years industry experience with Superior Performance and Command leadership supporting General and Flag Officers in Joint and Combined Space Warfighter environments. His duties and responsibilities included working with the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), Army Space and Missile Defense Command Army Strategic (SMDC/ARSTRAT), US Fleet Cyber Command (USFLEETCYBERCOM), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and HQ Air Force Space Command (HQ AFSPC). He has excelled in multiple leadership positions spanning Strategic, Operational and Tactical levels as Advisor to HQ AFSPC, Director, Integrated Air, Space, Cyber & ISR Ops; Deputy Commander of 9th Space Operations Squadron (125-mbr unit) performing operations in the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC) and as the Deputy Director of the 614th Air & Space Operations Center; Commander, Det 1, 8th Space Warning Squadron; and Dean, Education and Training of the Reserve National Security Space Institute. During these key leadership roles, he led joint & combined crews during multiple Tier-1 exercises spanning Operations Global Lightning, Global Thunder, Schriever Wargames and Red Flag. He has created a squadron from an Employment Concept to a fully manned squadron, complete with facilities and operational budget. He has created designs for multiple satellite operations facilities for which some were built and are still in use today.

Mr. Michael “Mike” T. Laney is a Department of the Air Force Civilian working as the Lead on International Engagement for Military Satellite Communications (MILSATCOM) under the Space Division for the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force (International Affairs), at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Mr. Laney oversees the development of cooperative agreements in MILSATCOM including wideband, narrowband, and protected satellite communications.

Mr. Laney enlisted in the United States Army June 1989, later graduating from the United States Military Academy June 1995. He continued serving on active duty in the United States Army as a commissioned officer until June 2004. His active duty experiences included multiple overseas assignments and deployments in Europe with frequent contact with host nation government representatives as a Military Police Officer. Upon separation from the Army, he continued to serve overseas as a Department of the Army Civilian -- first as a Host Nation Liaison Officer, then later as a Government Relations Advisor in Belgium. Upon returning from his last overseas assignment in 2011, Mr. Laney transferred to the Department of the Air Force as an International Relations Specialist.

Mike Nichols is the Deputy Director, Commercial Satellite Communications Office (CSCO), Space Systems Command (SSC), United States Space Force (USSF). He manages a portfolio of commercial satellite services and capabilities with a lifecycle value of $6B (USD). Mr. Nichols facilitates the delivery of operationally responsive, customer-focused, and cost-effective commercial satellite communications solutions meeting DoD, Federal Agency, and International Partner requirements. This is accomplished through the implementation of focused acquisition, engineering, cybersecurity, and operational strategies across mission platforms.

Mr. Nichols has managed Information Technology programs as a Department of Defense Civilian for 36 years, implementing end to end enterprise solutions across space and terrestrial domains, cloud computing services, cybersecurity, network operations, and transformative business strategies.

During the span of his career, Mr. Nichols has resided abroad managing communication services for the United States Navy (Naples, Italy); terrestrial enterprise architecture programs for the Defense Information Systems Agency (Stuttgart, Germany); Southwest Asia telecommunication programs for DISA Headquarters (National Capital Region); and deployed as a Senior Telecommunications Advisor to the Afghan Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kabul, Afghanistan).

Prior to his current position, Mr. Nichols was the Program Manager, Commercial Satellite Solutions Program, United States Space Force, Fort Meade, Maryland, implementing a number of transformative strategies across service delivery and business operation disciplines and platforms.

A U.S. Navy Veteran, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (University of Maryland), Mr. Nichols is proud to serve the Department of Defense providing critical enterprise telecommunication solutions enabling Military, Government, and Coalition Partner capabilities.

Mike Dean

Mike Dean currently serves as the Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Division Chief for C3 Infrastructure Directorate of the Deputy Chief Information Officer for Command, Control, and Communications (C3), Office of the Secretary of Defense, Chief Information Officer. As DoD SATCOM Chief, he provides technical expertise, oversight and broad guidance on policy, programmatic and technical issues relating to DoD SATCOM to integrate and synchronize defense-wide communications programs and achieve the DoD’s Digital Modernization Strategy initiatives. He also advises on efforts to achieve and maintain information dominance through DoD SATCOM for the Department of Defense. He manages efforts defining DoD policies and strategies for design, architecture, interoperability standards, capability development and sustainment of DoD SATCOM and serves as the DoD CIO’s focal point for international partnership activities in SATCOM to include the NATO SATCOM Services 6th Generation (NSS6G) activities.

Before joining federal government service, Mike served as a career Army Signal Corps and Cyberspace officer for more than 27 years (including multiple command positions and multiple combat deployments within the 82d Airborne Division as well as serving as the Space Branch Chief in the Joint Staff J6). Following his military career, Mike served as a defense contractor for in multiple roles supporting the DoD CIO in satellite communications and information enterprise management. Mike’s most notable role in DoD SATCOM is the development of the Enterprise SATCOM Management and Control Reference Architecture published in 2019 by the DoD to describe the building code for DoD enterprise SATCOM modernization.

She spent time with NATO, DE&S and multiple overseas detachments. 
 
Not wanting to leave the military fully, she remained as a Part Time Voluntary Reservist, where she now instructs on the Space Operations Courses and is assisting defence with their Space System requirements.

Squadron Leader Daniel Askew commissioned from Royal Air Force College Cranwell in 2000, graduating from the Engineering Specialist Training School in 2001.  As a junior officer he completed two operational focused tours as the Deputy Flight Commander on A Flight, No 2 (Field Communications) Sqn, Tactical Communications Wing, and as the Engineering Officer on 37 Sqn Royal Air Force Regiment.  He served as a Staff Officer in the Force Protection Force HQ and in A6 at HQ Air Command.  Upon return from a 6-month deployment in 2010 on Op HERRICK he was posted to the Communications Information Systems Training School, RAF Cranwell, as a Course Officer and later became the second in command. 

In February 2013, after a short tour as the Deputy Officer Commanding No 1 (FC) Sqn, TCW, he was promoted and posted back to HQ AIR Command as the Performance and Risk Manager for AOC 38 Gp.  After completing a tour in PJHQ J6 he took command of No 2 (Field Communications) Sqn, Tactical Communications Wing in December 2016.  In 2019 Daniel moved to Gibraltar to become the Head of Defence Digital Joint Communications Support Unit (JCSU (Gibraltar)), responsible for all MoD Network Infrastructure and the delivery of CIS services to Gibraltar.  Upon completion of this post he moved to NATO Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Headquarters in Norfolk as the SatCom Program Director.

In 2018, Stuart Eves founded his own space consultancy company, SJE Space Ltd, after spending 16 years working for the UK Ministry Of Defence, and 14 years with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited.

He has been involved with a wide variety of space missions, including TopSat, which set a satellite world record for “resolution per mass” when it was launched in 2005, and which was featured in the Space Gallery at the Science Museum in London.
 
Stuart’s 2017 book “Space Traffic Control”, describes the measures needed to maintain the space environment and protect satellites from both natural hazards and man-made threats. 
 
He serves on the Advisory Panel for the ESA Space Safety Programme, and is a founder of the GNOSIS network on sustainability in space.
 
He has appeared in a diverse range of published media on all aspects of space, and has previously been a recipient of an Arthur Clarke Award for space education and outreach.
 
Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in satellite constellation design, and has been a fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society for more than 25 years. He’s not an astronaut, but he is an Astro-nut!

Trond Hermansen is a SATCOM specialist within operational use of military SATCOM. He is now working as a special advisor in SATCOM to the Norwegian Armed Forces Cyberdefence. He is a former naval operational officer and has specialized in operational use of military SATCOM. He is presently engaged as operational project officer for the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission project and the HEO-2 project that both will deliver 2 communication satellites in a high elliptical orbit in 2023 and 2026 respectvely.

Vice Admiral Dr. Thomas Daum

 Vice-Admiral Dr Thomas Daum joined the Bundeswehr as an officer candidate in 1981. After studying computer science at the Bundeswehr University in Munich and completing his naval officer education, he received first command assignments on seagoing units. From 1996 onwards, he took part in the two-year admiral staff officers’ training at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Hamburg.

His career as a senior officer was characterised by assignments at command headquarters and at the Federal Ministry of Defence, where he served in the areas of CIS support/C4ISR as well as concepts and capability analysis. He was also given command assignments at home and abroad, especially as commander of a fast patrol boat squadron, also on NATO operations.

He served as Head of the Information Technology Directorate at the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) from 2012 to 2015 and as Chief of Staff and Deputy General Manager as well as Chief Operating Officer of the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) in Brussels, Belgium, from 2015 to 2019.

After becoming Chief of Staff at the German Cyber and Information Domain Service Headquarters on 1 April 2019, Dr Daum was appointed as Chief of the Cyber and Information Domain Service on 25 September 2020.

Viktoria Urban works as an Editorial Director for Space Impulse. She graduated as a Journalist from Edinburgh Napier University, and is currently a third-year BSc student at the Open University studying Astronomy and Planetary Science. Dave is an Engineer with 25 years leadership and managerial experience in the fields of Satellite Procurement, Satellite Communications (technical and service delivery), Policy development, International relations, network communications, and IT delivery and services management. 
 
In recent roles Dave has assisted in the formation of the MOD's Space Command and Space Directorate, been responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of services from the MOD's Skynet 5 communications satellite constellation, managed MOD SATCOM Policy, and delivered Communications and Information Systems to MOD forces deployed Worldwide.
 
Dave is creative and passionate about developing Military and Civilian applications for the use of Space.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
